This is a journal of the South Island Junket 2002: one week of the most awesome mountain riding in the most awesome setting anywhere!

I've broken up the Junket into one page per day due to the large number of pictures that were taken. I know that's a lot, but it seemed a shame not to show the whole trip, especially after the time Barney and I put into taking the pictures. (And everyone likes to see photos of themselves, right?) Enjoy the memories.

Day 7 - Queen Charlotte (Final leg)

Te Mahia - Anikiwa
Today ends the Queen Charlotte track and ends our Junket Tour. We road from Te Mahia to the end of the track at Anakiwa.
The bus picked us up and again we stopped at Peloris for a dip in the river before returning to Nelson.

The book describes this section of the Queen Charlotte  as "...biking at it's best - exhilarating single track through beautiful native forest." And they weren't wrong.
Before starting the final leg we did a small side trip on Vogels Track, affectionately known as the Vogeltown Massacre. The roots were unbeleiveable. Just getting on and riding any of it was an accomplishment. Done it once, don't need to do it again!

Our last breakfast on the Te Mahia deck, and yet another beautiful sunny day.

Darryl found a ridable spot on Vogels. Those shin pads took a beating coming down the hill.

Here's a sampling of the kind of roots on Vogels track. And this wasn't the worst of it. I'm sure the front riders had a blast but those of us at the back couldn't keep up to see if they actually rode any of it.

This is the bottom half of Vogels which was very fun with lots of switchbacks.

Opps, missed the corner!

The camera person doesn't quite have the timing for taking pictures of people  riding the switchbacks. Trust me, it was great to watch these two.

This is pretty much the only picture of the last leg of the Queen Charlotte. We had a great pace happening and there just wasn't time to stop. It was way too much fun. We left some heads spinning as we blasted by the hikers and other bikers.

Last bridge and and it's all over except the road ride to the bus.

This is pretty much where the track ends.

This ends the riding section of the 2002 Junket. For Roy and I this was definately a highlight of our stay in New Zealand. Our thanks to Skoda Pops and all the gang from the Auckland Mountain Bike Club. It's great people, like you, who make a trip such as this so successful. We look forward to touring you around our trails at home when you ever come to Calgary.
More T's to come on this page.

Day 8 - Abel Tasman

After leaving the Junket Crew we took a quick trip up to Marahau and took a boat trip up the coast line of the Abel Tasman.

We caught the boat from Marahau and cruised the coast as far as Tonga Bay. We then walked back to Bark Bay and were picked up on the boats return trip. We only had one day so the boat trip was the best way to see as much as possible.

A small boat was used to shuttle us to the larger boat.

We cruised by a small island with baby seals basking in the sun.

A quick snack at Tonga Bay before our hike to Bark Bay.

Marahau was a gold mine of moving T's and T's in general.
