This is a journal of the South Island Junket 2002: one week of the most awesome mountain riding in the most awesome setting anywhere!

I've broken up the Junket into one page per day due to the large number of pictures that were taken. I know that's a lot, but it seemed a shame not to show the whole trip, especially after the time Barney and I put into taking the pictures. (And everyone likes to see photos of themselves, right?) Enjoy the memories.

Day 1 - Nelson

A relaxing morning starting with breakfast in town, a brief musical interlude, and a ride to the top of Dun Mountain.

Secret Talents, or has this man biked up stairway to heaven?

Dun Mountain

From the outskirts of town we started our climb up a dirt road. Once we hit the single track all was well until the first switchback. We missed our turn and ended up riding, or shall we say pushing, up the cross country down-hill track. Wickedly steep. We eventually made the top of the mtn where we took in the excellent views before our rapid descent.

A rest in the shade. High Flyer. The big push. Ug. Consensus was unanimous. We ain't going down there!

The final push to the top of Dun Mountain.

Pelorus Bridge

After a great pre-trip warm-up ride on Dun Mountain, we hopped aboard the bus and make our way to Canvastown.

View from the bridge.
"Jump!"

Oops

A stop at Pelorus Bridge for a quick dip was certainly in order.

Trout Hotel, Canvastown
You have to see it to beleive it. Truly a step back in time.

We were "fortunate" to be at the Trout for their 60's night with the Blenheim Country (Non-Talent) Show Band. Yes, even Elvis was there.

After massaging about 8 people Jane's still into it. Just who's leg is that anyway? Jane gets some payback from the group. Carol takes the back.... ....while Skoda and Darryl  took turns doing a leg each. "Yes we love doing dishes! We're good kids.
Remember that"

The band finally quit playing about 1:00 AM and we managed to catch some snooze time for the big ride the next day.

Bunny hop to....Day 2.....
