Cortona

Day 6 - Today was a free day to ride or do whatever we wanted. Sandy, Bruce, Doug, Roy and Carol's route was to head from Cortona up over a pass and back down to the bottom to Pierle. From there it was onto Lisciano and then back up on the other side of the valley to the top of the pass. From the pass it was all downhill to Tuoro and back to Camucia.

Bob and Sherman's route went beyond Cortona and eventually down to Lisciano. From there they headed towards Pierle and over the first pass we had come down. Sherman wouldn't let Bob stop to take pictures cuz he was afraid he'd be later for dinner. We thought we had a long hard day but they're lucky they made it back before dark.

It was quite a grind up to the top of the first pass. From near the top of the pass we could see the road we wanted to get onto but it would mean riding all the way down to the valley and back up the other side. So we went for it. Part way down we could see the town of Mercatale which would be the start of our second climb.

 Pierle
The bonus was seeing this tiny village, Pierle, with the old ruins of a castle

The outhouse here is literally the "out" house.
It was an add on to the building and was suspended above the ground with a plumbing pipe leading back into the main building. Awesome: the proverbial brick shithouse.

Sandy riding down main street.

As in every village there are plants growing everywhere.

We weren't quite sure what was going on here but this couple were intent on cutting the lock off the gate to this old ruin. Must have lost the key or something and were putting on a new lock.

We stopped in Mercatale for some lunch.
The old boys had a intense game of cards going.

Here starts the next hill climb up to the top of the pass and on to Tuoro.

Roy trying to blend in with the tobacco plants.

Harvesting tobacco.

It was along winding road to the top of the pass.

It was disheartening to find they didn't have gelato at the restaurant.
The views were awesome though.

Lago Trasimeno in the distance.

Roy riding under a canopy of trees in Tuoro.

I was always amazed at just how close buildings
and residences were built to the main road.

Back in Camucia, Doug and Roy ride by the stone wall, which not only separates our accommodation from the street but is a part of the building itself.

You gotta be cruel to be kind! Bruce uses the pasta roller to grind into Sandy's tight IT's. Yowch!

Dinner tonight is lemon, basil chicken, green beans and pasta prepared by Carol and Roy.

Shift into gear for Day 7
